Cuitlaxochitl Poinsettia Flower (PDF Pattern) NEW!

$5.00

In Nahuatl , the language of the Aztecs, the name for the plant we call “poinsettia” is cuetlaxochitl (kwet-la-sho-she). The word comes from cuitlatl, for residue, and xochitl, for flower, and combines to mean "flower that grows in residues or soil." The name can also be translated to “brilliant flower,” and the Mayans referred to it as k'alul wits, or “ember flower.” The Aztecs cultivated cuetlaxochitl long before the European colonization of the Americas and used the milky sap to control fevers and the leaves to create red and purple dyes.

Tip for this snowflake pattern: This pattern uses smaller hole punches (1/16” and 1/8”) and some of the hole punches are along the fold. I typically unfold the pattern and line up my hole punch right along the seam of the fold to cut those circles out (rather than attempting to hole punch ON the fold, which is tricky!)
